Puerto Plata
Puerto
Plata is the capital of the province of the same name and is the most important
port on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The exact date of the port’s
settlement is subject to conjecture. However, some researchers have suggested
that Puerto Plata may be have been founded in 1496 by Bartolomé, the
brother of Columbus. Other schools of thought have opined that Nicolás
de Ovando may have founded the city in 1502.
In
any case, the port’s importance was enhanced by the need to put an end
to rampant piracy and smuggling along the north coast. In the 17th century it
was almost overrun by buccaneers; but it was rebuilt in the mid-18th century.
In the past two decades the city has experienced a remarkable economic resurgence.
Its
role as a significant tourist center stems mainly from the large number of hotels
and its international airport. During the day the heart of the city, the Parque
Central, throbs with life. Around the Victorian music pavilion shoeshine boys,
tourist guides and motorbike-taxis try to earn a few pesos alongside street
hawkers who loudly advertise lottery tickets, cold beverages, fresh fruit and
fried Yucca.
A few steps east of the Parque Central you will find yourself in the city’s main attraction-- the amber museum. The museum is housed in a colonial-style building and holds some of the biggest and most valuable stones ever found. A special experience is the funicular ascent that was reopened to the public earlier this year.
At 798 meters high, this mountain, called "Pico Isabel de Torres”, offers a stunning panoramic view of the port city.
Puerto Plata is
home to many historical and cultural jewels, large tourist facilities with first
class entertainment, world famous Ocean World, casinos and golf courses.
